Does Wildcard SSL Need Dedicated IP for Each Sub-domain?
Recently we received this question at our customer support and we thought to share it at SSL University. Here is the original question:
I own an ecommerce website hosted on dedicated IP. Now, my hosting provider recommended Wildcard SSL Certificate to secure multiple sub-domain of this website. He asked me to go for dedicated IP for each sub-domain! However, as far as I know, one dedicated IP will work fine to protect all sub-domains and root domain by Wildcard SSL. Do I really need dedicated IP for each sub-domain to secure them with Wildcard SSL Certificate?
Cheap SSL Shop Reply:
No!
Wildcard SSL certificate does not require dedicated IPs for each sub-domain. It will work fine if your root domain and all sub-domains hosted on single dedicated IP. You can learn more about different wildcard SSL certificate products and its feature at our official website.
