• Firstly, The user’s browser sends an identifying request to the website server.
• Following that, the server replies by transmitting a copy of the SSL certificate.
• A message is sent to the server by the user’s browser after it has verified the SSL certificate copy and determined whether or not to trust it.
• The client’s browser can begin an encrypted session if the server transmits a digitally signed confirmation indicating that the certificate is trusted.
• After receiving the digitally signed confirmation, the user’s browser and the server begin encrypted communication.
• Lastly, a padlock & HTTPS will be visible in the address bar.

Three different types of SSL certificates are available:

• DV SSL – Domain Validation Certificate
• OV SSL – Organization Validation Certificate
• EV SSL – Extended Validation Certificate

In order to handle different processes with a single certificate, Certificate Authorities also offer Wildcard SSL and Multi-Domain SSL.
